Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
