The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
