Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters
A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
