European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
